Common Amazon and Walmart Listing Errors and How to Fix Them

Written by Melanie

Listing errors usually occur when product information is missing, invalid, or conflicts with marketplace requirements. Below are some common errors encountered when uploading products to Amazon and Walmart, along with their causes and resolutions.

1. Amazon Listing Errors

Error 5665 – Brand Name Not Approved

Cause: The brand name entered in the listing has not been approved by Amazon.

Resolution: Request brand name approval through Amazon Seller Support or Brand Registry, where eligible. Ensure the brand name matches the actual product. Only use Generic for genuinely unbranded products.

Error 5461 – ASIN Creation Restricted

Cause: Amazon has restricted the seller from creating a new ASIN for the specified brand.

Resolution: Request authorization from Amazon to create the ASIN. If the product already exists in Amazon's catalog, match it to the existing ASIN instead.

Error 8572 – Product ID / GTIN Mismatch

Cause: The UPC, EAN, ISBN, or other product identifier does not match the product or brand information.

Resolution: Verify the identifier against GS1 records and ensure it belongs to the exact product. If the information is correct, contact Amazon Seller Support with the required supporting documents.

Error 8541 – Amazon Catalog Conflict

Cause: The submitted product information conflicts with an existing Amazon catalog entry associated with the product identifier.

Resolution: Verify that the correct ASIN and product identifier are being used. If it is the same product, align conflicting attributes with the existing catalog. If Amazon's catalog information is incorrect, request a correction through Seller Support.

Error 8040 – Variation Relationship / Authorization Error

Cause: Amazon may restrict the creation of a variation relationship when the seller is not authorized for the brand or variation.

Resolution: Verify the brand authorization and variation eligibility. Ensure the parent-child relationship and variation theme follow Amazon's requirements.

Missing Required Attributes

Cause: Required product information, such as dimensions, material, manufacturer, or category-specific attributes, is missing.

Resolution: Check the Amazon processing report for the missing fields. Update the required attributes in ExportYourStore's feed mapping or product details and submit the products again.

2. Walmart Listing Errors

Invalid Product ID

Cause: The UPC, GTIN, or other product identifier is invalid, incorrectly formatted, or does not match the product.

Resolution: Verify the identifier and correct any errors, including missing leading zeros or invalid check digits. Resubmit the corrected product data.

Unauthorized 'CUSTOM' Product IDs

Cause: The seller is attempting to list products using a custom product ID without an approved UPC/GTIN exemption.

Resolution: Use a valid product identifier or request a GTIN exemption through Walmart Seller Center, if eligible.

Missing Variant Group Information

Cause: Required variation fields, such as Variant Group ID, Variant Attribute Name, or Is Primary Variant, are missing or incorrectly configured.

Resolution: Update the variation information and ensure all related products have the correct group ID and variation attributes.

Main Image URL Does Not Meet Requirements

Cause: The submitted image URL does not meet Walmart's image URL requirements or cannot be accessed.

Resolution: Verify that the image URL is accessible and meets Walmart's image requirements. Update the image information and resubmit the product.

Reasonable Price Not Satisfied

Cause: Walmart considers the offer price significantly higher than relevant reference prices or competing offers and automatically unpublishes the item.

Resolution: Check the reference price in Walmart's Unpublished Items dashboard and adjust the listing price if necessary. If the external price match is incorrect, submit a price-match review through Seller Center.

Pricing Error

Cause: Walmart identifies the offer price as unusually low and automatically unpublishes the item to prevent unintended losses.

Resolution: Review the reference price and correct the offer price if needed. Contact Walmart Support if the price is intentional and requires review.

Important Notes

  • Some errors require corrections or approvals directly in Amazon Seller Central or Walmart Seller Center.

  • After correcting the data, submit the affected products again and check their listing status.
