Best Practices for Cross-Listing Products to Amazon and Walmart

Written by Melanie

Creating accurate, optimized, and compliant listings through ExportYourStore helps improve product visibility, maintain listing quality, and reduce common feed and synchronization issues.

Although Amazon and Walmart share many listing requirements, each marketplace has its own content standards, image specifications, category requirements, and listing policies. Follow the practices below when preparing products for either marketplace.

1. Optimize Product Data

Provide complete, accurate, and consistent product information before exporting.

  • Use clear, descriptive, keyword-relevant product titles.

  • Write accurate product descriptions and key features that reflect the actual product.

  • Fill in all required attributes, including category-specific fields.

  • Ensure the brand, product type, category, size, color, material, and other details are accurate.

  • Use the correct units of measurement and attribute values.

  • Avoid promotional language, unsupported claims, irrelevant keywords, and misleading information.

Marketplace-specific notes:

  • Amazon: When the product already exists in Amazon's catalog, match it to the correct ASIN instead of creating a duplicate product detail page. Create a new listing when the product is genuinely new.

  • Walmart: Follow the product type and category-specific content standards. Walmart's general guidance recommends concise titles of no more than 150 characters.

2. Map Categories and Product Attributes Correctly

Correct category and attribute mapping helps marketplaces understand your products and process listings accurately.

In ExportYourStore:

  • Map each source category to the appropriate Amazon or Walmart category.

  • Use feed mapping to connect source product attributes to the corresponding marketplace fields.

  • Review required attributes and resolve missing or invalid values before exporting.

Remember that category mapping and feed mapping serve different purposes: category mapping assigns the appropriate marketplace category, while feed mapping supplies the product type and attribute information required by that marketplace.

3. Maintain Compliant Product Images

Use clear, high-quality images that accurately represent the product being sold.

  • Use professional, well-lit images with the product clearly visible.

  • Ensure images match the product title, description, and selected variant.

  • Avoid watermarks, promotional text, misleading claims, and retailer or marketplace logos.

  • Do not show accessories or items that are not included with the purchase.

  • Provide additional images showing different angles, details, or product features where possible.

Marketplace-specific notes:

  • Amazon: The main image generally requires a pure white background. Images must be at least 500 pixels on the longest side, and 1,000 pixels or more are recommended to enable zoom.

  • Walmart: The image guidelines specify a square 1:1 aspect ratio, with 2,200 × 2,200 pixels as the recommended dimensions and at least 1,500 × 1,500 pixels for zoom. Walmart also recommends a minimum of four images per listing.

Always check the latest image requirements for your product category, as additional rules may apply.

4. Maintain Accurate Inventory and Pricing

Keep inventory and pricing information accurate across your connected stores and marketplaces.

  • Verify that product prices and quantities are correct before enabling synchronization.

  • Review inventory settings to avoid unintended quantity changes.

  • Check for pricing mismatches between your source store and target marketplace.

  • Avoid inaccurate or misleading prices and ensure your offers comply with marketplace pricing policies.

  • Monitor synchronization status and investigate unexpected inventory or price updates.

Do not set inventory to zero unless the product is genuinely out of stock. For Amazon, also review the relevant inventory and offer status in Seller Central. For Walmart, remember that an item must be published and have available inventory to be purchasable.

5. Follow Marketplace Policies and Product Requirements

Before exporting products, check whether they are eligible for sale on the target marketplace.

  • Review prohibited and restricted product policies.

  • Check whether your category, brand, or product requires approval.

  • Ensure product identifiers, such as UPC, EAN, or GTIN, are valid and match the actual product.

  • Apply for a GTIN exemption only when eligible and where the marketplace permits it.

  • Provide required safety, compliance, and regulatory information.

  • Avoid unsupported product claims or inaccurate brand information.

Marketplace approvals and exemptions are determined by Amazon or Walmart. ExportYourStore can help with product data preparation and listing configuration, but cannot guarantee marketplace approval.

6. Monitor Listing and Feed Status

Regularly review your marketplace dashboards and ExportYourStore to identify issues before they affect a large number of products.

  • Check feed processing results and resolve reported errors.

  • Review products that are not listed, suppressed, unpublished, or rejected.

  • Correct missing attributes, invalid identifiers, category mismatches, and variation errors.

  • Monitor Walmart's Listing Quality dashboard and Unpublished Items dashboard.

  • Monitor Amazon's listing status and suppressed or inactive listings in Seller Central.

  • Recheck products after making corrections to confirm their status.
